About University
Semey State Medical University (SSMU) is regarded as one of the top medical institutions in Kazakhstan. Established in 1952, it was initially known as the Semipalatinsk State Medical Institute. Over four decades later, the university was renamed Semey State Medical University by order of the Health Services Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The first batch of students was admitted to the medicine faculty in 1953. Over time, the university expanded its programs, adding the pediatrics faculty in 1963 and the stomatology (dentistry) faculty in 1991. In 2003, new faculties such as medico-prophylactic, pharmaceutical studies, and general medicine were introduced. Additionally, in 1984, the university began offering post-graduate education in Pavlodar city, with approximately 1,000 doctors enrolling annually in these advanced programs.
Currently, SSMU is home to over 3,500 students enrolled in programs such as general medicine, pediatrics, stomatology, pharmaceuticals, and medico-prophylactics. The university prides itself on delivering high-quality medical education using advanced technology and modern equipment. Its teaching staff consists of around 450 professionals, including 35 Doctors of Sciences, one academician, 168 PhDs, three corresponding members of the AMS RK, and four corresponding members of the ANS RK.
The university is also affiliated with several hospitals, providing students with valuable internship opportunities to gain practical experience under the supervision of experienced mentors and practicing doctors.
