RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Why Learn Russian?

Russian is one of the three major languages of the world, together with English and Chinese, spoken by 280 million people. Russian is the language used to publish more than 25% of the scientific publications worldwide. Studying Russian became more and more important after the Cold War ended since Russia was now open to foreign banks, corporations, media, entertainment, and culture. Every year, hundreds of Russians come to visit and do business in the US, and thousands more have moved here permanently. Russia is still a major player in world affairs, and past experience indicates that there is an increasing need for foreign professionals who speak Russian.
Even while it might seem like there are fewer reasons to study Russian now that the Soviet Union has collapsed, the nation is still rich in literature, theater, music, and culture. Furthermore, English remains the primary means of communication with the former Soviet countries, at least until their native tongues become more widely used in this nation.

Just a few of the reasons why study Russian:

Foreigners studying Russian are encouraged to do so by business opportunities in Russia. Russia’s reappearance in the global economy has created a sizable, mainly untapped market for products and services from the West. Due to Russia’s abundance of natural resources and highly educated labor force, economic opportunities in the area will only grow with time. More than 300 American companies have already established operations in Russia, and companies from Western Europe are investing in the country even more aggressively.
International relations, politics, and government. Russia is still a major player in world affairs, and those who study the language can find a wide range of job options in governmental and non-governmental organizations. Students studying Russian have an interesting opportunity to learn about a country that is undergoing significant transformation due to the profound changes in both the government and society at large that followed the fall of communism.
Study up on a distinct culture. Learning a second language gives a special chance to have a deep understanding of another culture. Russia has a complex and fascinating cultural environment due to its unique history and location on the border between Europe and Asia. There are now many more options than in the past to visit Russia and get a firsthand look at this civilization. Learning Russian opens up opportunities to study Russia’s rich literary, artistic, and musical traditions. The knowledge and comprehension of Russian language and culture that can be acquired has practical applications for the workplace, in addition to being an intellectually engaging and enriching experience in and of itself. The cultural awareness you acquire can be useful in other contexts even if you don’t use your specialized knowledge of Russian.
All of the courses combine a comprehensive and methodical grammatical approach with the study of popular terms used in everyday settings. They are based on communicative approaches. Learning a language like Russian, which has an inflectional system and an arbitrary word order—a language whose meaning is determined by word endings or word placement—requires mastery of this.
Grammar is taught in a way that is psychologically proven to go from simple “basic concepts” to more complex topics, with conversational topics being provided with the proper grammar structures (e.g. naming objects – describing locations – actions with objects – moving to and from, etc.). One of the most crucial ideas is that learners can achieve their own communicative goals when they are continuously trained in communicative skills and models. This ensures that students have the language tools necessary to express themselves in everyday contexts.
We offer group lessons in Russian at six levels year-round (beginning to intermediate), with the addition of upper-intermediate and advanced classes during the busy summer months. We have modified the European Language Portfolio architecture for compatibility considerations. The average number of lessons needed to finish each level is determined on our experience with students who have attended our program. Enrolling in a one-on-one course will allow students to advance through the levels faster.
